If you can, include your iPhone model, iOS version, KinPath version, and the relationship chain that reproduces the problem. Please do not send your family-tree backup file — almost no question needs it.

Common questions

Why doesn't it just answer when I say 姑姑?

Because 姑姑 can be either your father's older sister or his younger sister, and the two produce different titles. KinPath offers both and lets you pick. Guessing would write a wrong relationship into your family tree, which is far more trouble than one more tap. 舅舅, 阿姨 and 侄子 are handled the same way.

Why do 大伯 and 二伯 both show as 伯父 sometimes?

Telling them apart depends on sibling birth order. If a person's rank has not been filled in, KinPath gives the general term only. Edit that person's rank under People, or enter siblings in order with quick entry, and the title becomes specific.

I asked a question — why aren't those people in my tree?

That is deliberate. Outside the first run, asking by chain only calculates. The card tells you how many people would be created and how many would attach to records you already have; nothing is saved until you press the save button.

It won't let me save a relationship.

Two different things can happen. Refused: the relationship contradicts itself or forms a cycle — making your own father your grandson, for example — and there can only ever be one relationship between the same two people. Flagged: the generation disagrees with the rest of the family, such as marking your father's brother as your own brother. That case explains the mismatch and still lets you save, because real families do produce those.

How do backups work? What about a new phone?

Export a JSON file from the backup screen; photos travel with it. Install KinPath on the new phone and import the same file. Importing merges rather than replaces: existing people are updated, new ones are added, and nothing is deleted.

Will importing an old backup lose photos I added since?

No. A person without a photo in the backup leaves your current photo alone rather than clearing it.

Can I change a relationship I already created?

Yes. Swipe the relationship on the person's detail screen to change its type or delete it; the other direction follows automatically.

Is there an iPad, Mac, or Android version?

KinPath is an iPhone app and requires iOS 17 or later.

Does my data sync to iCloud?

The app does no syncing of its own and requires no account. If you have whole-device iCloud Backup turned on, KinPath's data is included in that system backup — that part is iOS, not the app. See the privacy policy.

Reporting a problem

A wrong kinship title is the most useful thing you can write in about. Include the chain between the two people, what KinPath said, what you believe the correct term is, and which region you are from — many terms vary regionally.
